“Gru is nice, but he tries to convince the world that he’s not!” Steve Carell dives deep into what makes ‘Gru’ the most lovable anti-hero in Despicable Me 4
Mumbai, July 2024: Ex-Supervillan, Gru is all set to create mayhem with Lucy, his adorable children, Margo, Edith and Agnes along with the newest addition, Gru Junior. In addition, the minions are back and stronger than ever in their new avatar, the Mega Minions! The latest addition to the Despicable Me franchise is directed by Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage. Universal Pictures (distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery) brings to audiences this July, a Chris Melandari and Illumination production, the much anticipated, Despicable Me 4.
The upcoming release features a star-studded cast with Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier and Pierre Coffin as returning characters, with exciting new additions of Sofia Vergara as Valentina, Joey King as Poppy, Madison Polan as Agnes and Will Ferell as Maxime Le Mal. The film begins on a wholesome, family-fun note until things take a turn for the worse when Gru has to run away with his family to a secluded location to avoid his former arch-nemesis, Maxime Le Mal and his girlfriend, Valentina.
As audiences have seen the growth of the character of ‘Gru’ through 3 films of Despicable Me, the 4th movie promises a stronger, more relatable evolution of Steve Carell’s role, as he tackles new challenges in every film, this one is no exception. On balancing ‘Gru Jr.’ and protecting his family with a threat over his head, Carell adds, “Lucy and the girls have always been his motivation to be the best that he can be, but with the arrival of Gru Jr., the family dynamic changes. Gru Jr. is a chip off the old block, but he’s not warming up to dear old dad. Gru has nothing but love for his baby boy, but he faces an uphill battle to win his son’s affection. It’s every parent’s nightmare to not instantly bond with your kids, and Gru struggles to establish a relationship with his new bundle of joy, while simultaneously saving the world as an AVL agent.”
Steve Carell excitedly reveals what makes his character tick in the new film, he says “Some people aren’t so nice, but they try to convince the world that they are; Gru is nice, but he tries to convince the world that he’s not! As the series has progressed, the writers have explored different aspects of Gru’s world.”
Will ‘Gru’ be able to manage his new parenting role, while trying to fight off his old nemesis and protect his family from evil dangers? Catch Despicable Me 4 available in theatres in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu on 5th July 2024.
