INDORE: Wednesday 19th September 2018- The Golden Book of World Record (GBWR) recognizes and awards the Dawoodi Bohra community for undertaking the largest zero waste religious event as part of the community’s Ashara Mubaraka sermons in Indore.

This award was presented to His Holiness Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin by Dr Manish Vishnoi, Asia Head, Golden Book of World Record today (19th September) at Saifee masjid.

The award was given in recognition to the community’s contribution in the following three categories

  1. Largest Zero Waste religious event for reducing, reusing and recycling waste
  2. Largest Zero Food Waste-based religious event to eliminate food wastage and ensure that not even a single morsel of food goes to waste after meals
  3. Upwards of 1,50,000 people – pledging to observe Cleanliness

“We are extremely honoured and humbled for being certified by the Golden Book of World Record. In keeping with Indore’s reputation of being India’s cleanest city and as per the teachings of His Holiness to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the neighbourhood, thousands of members of the Nazafat (cleanliness) and Dana (grain) committee teams have been working relentlessly every day to maintain hygiene and reduce food wastage.”, shared Mr Khuzaima Petiwala, local PR coordinator.

We are glad that every one of the 2 lakh plus attendees have embraced this cause and contributed in reducing food and plastic waste throughout the event”, he added

During his recent address to the community members in Indore, the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi even appreciated the community’s move of linking the ‘Ashara Mubaraka’ event with messages of environmental conservation and cleanliness. The event, PM Modi said, has banned plastic bags and is being carried out with the zero waste motto. For doing so, nearly 10 tons of waste is recycled every day and the compost produced in the process is given free of cost to farmers.

Throughout the Ashara event in Indore, various sensitising activities have been undertaken by Nazafat volunteers to keep the neighbourhood clean. Regular messages are sent to community members for maintaining hygiene and avoiding usage of plastic bags. Additionally a mass cleanliness drive ‘Lets Leave Indore Cleaner’ was also rolled out today where community members cleaned up the streets near Saifee Nagar and other centres.
