Saved Life of a 3-month-old baby suffering from rare congenital heart disease
Emergency surgery was done at Apollo Hospital
Indore | At a time when the government is focused on preventing the spread of the corona virus and most hospitals in the city are battling with Covid-19, a 3-month-old baby with rare congenital heart disease was brought to the Apollo Hospital.
Due to heart failure, the child was admitted to a private hospital, wherein doctors discovered that she had a rare congenital heart disease called obstructed super cardiac TAPVC, which required immediate surgery to save the child’s life. The child was referred to Apollo Hospital as soon as doctors came to know about this disease.
Full support received from government officials
The parents of the child were told about the surgery but they were not in a position to bear the expenses of this surgery. In this situation, without delay, the hospital decided to perform the surgery of this child under the government’s RBSK scheme.
At this time focus of all the government officials is on stopping the spread of Covid-19. But, in spite of all their busyness, in just one day under the scheme, they approved the estimated amount to be spent on the surgery, to save this little life.
Due to the active approach and efficient medical care, the emergency surgery of the child happened on time and the child is now completely safe. The credit for the successful emergency surgery of the child goes to pediatric cardiac surgeon Dr Nishith Bhargava and his team. The child was kept in ICU for 3 days and discharged from hospital 6 days after surgery.
What is Obstructed Supercardiac TAPVC?
Pediatric cardiac surgeon Dr Nishith Bhargava explains that this is a rare congenital heart disease in which oxygen-rich blood from the child’s lungs goes back to the right side of the heart instead of its left side, causing the child’s body to get not enough oxygen.
Usually, there is a hole in the heart of such children, by which a small amount of oxygen-rich blood reaches the body and keeps the child alive. In this case, the hole in the child’s heart was getting smaller with time. This is why due to cardiac failure the child had to be brought to the hospital in an emergency. Such children cannot survive without surgery.
Due to the lack of timely surgery, they die from cardiac arrest and shortness of breath. That’s why, if surgery happens at the right time, these children can also lead a normal life. It is advised to the parents to seek the consultation of a good doctor for their child as soon as symptoms of this disease appear.
Common symptoms of this disease
– Fast breathing rate.
– Difficulty in drinking mother’s milk, not being able to drink much milk.
– No weight gain and blue body.
– Reduced amount of oxygen in the body.
