TIMELY SURGERY AT APOLLO RAJSHREE HOSPITALS HELPS NEWBORN SURVIVE RARE CARDIAC DISEASE
CENTRAL INDIA’S FIRST NEONATAL PACEMAKER AT APOLLO RAJSHREE HOSPITALS HELPS NEWBORN SURVIVE RARE CARDIAC DISEASE
Indore: An adult heart normally beats from 65-80 times every minute. In children, this is much faster- and depending on their age it may vary from 120-160/ minute. We, at Apollo Rajshree Hospital, Indore, saved a 2 day old, 2 kg new-born with a heart rate of just 50 beats per minute. Without treatment, it was impossible for the new born to survive.
The Child was suffering from Congenital Heart Block with a Heart rate of less than 50 beats per min. Condition was timely diagnosed by Pediatric Cardiologist Dr Sanjukta Bhargava when the baby was admitted in SNS Hospital Under Dr Zafar Khan with complain of Heart Failure & Respiratory difficulty.
Dr. Sanjukta Bhargava timely diagnosed the problem and referred her to Apollo Rajshree Hospital, Vijay Nagar, Indore, where successful implantation of a permanent Pacemaker under Dr. Nishit Bhargava was performed following which patient had a steady recovery and was discharged in stable condition.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Nishith Bhargava said that it was probably first such case done in Central India. “When child was admitted to Apollo, she was suffering from Congenital Heart Block with a Heart rate of less than 50 beats per minute, which is not sustainable with life. The normal heart rate should be between 120-160 beats per minute.
He also added CHB {Congenital Heart Block} is a rare disorder with incidence of 1:22,000 with very low survival rates. It occurs mostly because of maternal antibodies which cross placenta and is transferred to foetus. These antibodies attach to and damage child’s Cardiomyocytes and conduction tissue.
The team consisting Dr. Nishit Bhargava, Dr. Sanjukta Bhargava, Dr. Zafar Khan, Dr. Bipin Arya performed successful surgery of the newborn. Surgeon Dr. Sanjukta Bhargava said that the biggest challenge during surgery was to convince the parents for surgical repair in a child who is just 2kg in weigh. The other challenge was the availability of Pacemaker. We are very happy the team was able to overcome the challenges and safe and healthy now’
