A rare feat achieved by Choithram Hospital, Liver transplant done in 4 OTs simultaneously

Two women showcases eternal love and care to save lives of their husband and son

Indore: In a major advancement, Choithram Hospital and Research Centre performed two live donor liver transplants on the same day by performing it on our four operation theatres.

Two patients both having liver failure received a part of liver from their family members. In one case, 52-year-old wife donated a part of her liver to her 55-year-old husband while in second case a 55-year-old woman donated a part of her liver to save life of her 27-year-old son.

All four patients recovered fully and were discharged from hospital. A team of four liver transplant surgical specialists led by Dr. Vivek Vij and Dr. Sudesh Sharda, with four transplant anaesthetist led by Dr. Piyush Shrivastava and Dr. Nitin Sharma , Dr. Neeraj Gupta along with team of 20 nursing staff and technicians delivered this rare feat for the first time in the state of MP.

Dean of MGM Medical College, Prof. Sanjay Dixit visited both the donors and recipients and congratulated the entire team. He saluted the strong will power of women in India for their sacrifice towards families.

HOD, Department of Liver and Biliary Diseases Dr. Ajay Jain, who is leading the liver transplant program of the hospital, informed that success rate of liver transplant surgery in India is around 95% and almost all patients after successful surgery resume their normal life and work schedule. This surgery is a life line for all patients of liver failure irrespective of its cause. In India Obesity, Diabetes and Metabolic syndrome along with alcohol abuse are prime cause of liver failure requiring liver transplant.
