The Dil Chahta Hai Line Farhan Akhtar Almost Cut, But Javed Akhtar Fought for It
One of the most memorable phrases in Dil Chahta Hai almost didn’t make it into the film. Farhan Akhtar revealed that he initially had serious reservations about the words ‘chamkile din’ in the title track – so much so that even while the song was being recorded, he was still hoping they would disappear.
Recalling the writing process during his conversation with Anupama Chopra, Farhan said he immediately associated the word with advertising. “I saw advertising ‘chamkila, chamkila’,” he recalled. “I’m like, yeah, this is just not right.”
But Javed Akhtar, who had written the lyrics, wasn’t willing to let it go. He argued that the unfamiliarity of the word was precisely what made it work.
“He’s like, please, this will be the USP of the song,” Farhan recalled. “This word is not used in any other song. It will be a new word, a new way to describe friendship.”
Farhan eventually agreed, but not exactly enthusiastically. His reservations continued right through the recording. “I had a problem with it when it was being recorded and being sung,” he admitted. “Every time ‘chamkile din’ was said, my toes were curling in my shoes.”
Yet Javed stood his ground and Farhan let the word stay.
Twenty-five years later, it is difficult to imagine the song without it. What sounded to Farhan like an advertising phrase became one of the words that gave the Dil Chahta Hai title track its distinctive personality and, as Javed had predicted, offered a new way of describing friendship.
The anecdote also reveals something about the creative dynamic behind the film. Farhan may have been the director, but he was willing to trust another instinct when he believed it was stronger than his own. In this case, his father was right.
